Create an Artsy Design in Illustrator

If you are a rising artist and you want to create a label that is based in the painting medium that you are using, we have tips on how to create a watercolor-Esque design via Illustrator by vectorizing the raster images like JPGs (in high-resolution or in good quality resolution).

In today’s blog, our designing team will show you a step-by-step guide on how to vectorize watercolors in Illustrator that will make it easier for you to create watercolor patterns. Before you begin, you should be mindful that vector files can be a burden to your computer if there is an imbalance between the quality of your watercolor vector and file size. If you are all set, you can follow these easy steps.

1st Drag and drop
Photoshop works fine but if your file is quite heavy, Illustrator is the way to go. The first thing you should do is drag then drop the image into the illustrator file. Use the function “image trace” in order to vectorize the watercolor image.

2nd Keep an eye in minor errors
To achieve seamless results, you should also learn how to edit the settings then learn how to correct the errors in your vectorized image in order to create a high-resolution vector so that there will be no complications once you plan to print it as your stickers. You should also be aware of the number of paths, anchors, and colors you have by clicking the Image Trace panel. Take note: The more paths you use, the larger file you’ll need to get. A high-resolution watercolor can consume hundreds of megabytes.

3rd Trace panel and click on expand
If you are happy with the way it turned out, you can close the Image Trace panel and click Expand. If you want to see if there are unwanted white edges, you can use the Rectangle Tool (M) to create a black background in order to see if there are white edges and empty areas too. Whenever there are white edges, use the Direct Selection tool to select them and then delete it and fill the empty areas with the color of your choice.

4th Save the finished product
Once you are done with tracing the panel, you may add text or other elements in the newly vectored design and save your file as a .ai file or as a .eps file when you are contented with your watercolor vector.
